AJUST is a not-for profit organisation that grew from the University of Cardiff Natural Economy Research Unit in the 1980s. This unit was established to research and develop the cross- curricular subject 'natural economy' in collaboration with the University of Cambridge Examination Syndicate. It was funded from the EU Educational Directorate.It is now part of Resilience-UK.

Inspired by a resilience management system produced by the Community and Regional Resilience Institute of the US

Research has shown that personal well being and community resilience are ultimately about achieving an acceptable level of functional self-reliance and sustainability through a just sharing of community resources. This outcome is a reflection of, and depends on, the entire community, not just the government and is based on the following principles.

  • The just shares management system (JSMS) will be used by the community itself, not a group of experts
  • The system must help the community define and prioritise actions to obtain their just share of community resources.
  • The system must be highly flexible and useful for communities regardless of size, type, or location

A community well being and resilience management system provides practical and immediately useable resources and processes to assess, measure, improve, and reward community sustainability.

In order to make the necessary improvements communities, need to:
  • understand what community well being and resilience means
  • assess where the community stands on a scale of well being and resilience with regards local services and resources
  • make improvements that can enhance daily function and make recovery from disturbance more rapid and more certain
  • access to tools and processes that help the community reach a more favourable state
  • have information regarding benefits available for communities to make improvements
  • obtain tangible rewards for their efforts

The objective is to transform daily community functions to:

  • Be action-oriented not reactionary
  • Create a local culture of wellbeing and resilience
  • Add value to the community by:
    • –Increasing the confidence of business and industry to locate.
    • –Reducing the community’s risk profile,
    • -Demonstrating better risk management to insurers
    • –Increasing lender/sponsor confidence,
    • -Encouraging a more robust local economic environment
    • –Improving the economic stability, vitality, and growth of the community

And in a crisis:
  • –Minimise disruption
  • –Help the community recover rapidly and with little loss of economic or social value
  • –Reduce reliance on limited external resources.
